I’ve been spending a few hours trying to get this Asteroids clone to some sort of playable state. Since I haven’t really done anything else blog-worthy today, I guess we’re talking about Phaser. I mocked up yesterday’s header image from assets I made with Inkscape; they weren’t actually from a real game. Today’s image is from a real game. Asteroids isn’t the toughest game to write. You spawn a ship, you spawn some rocks, you spawn a laser, rocks go away. Since there’s not much to the game itself, it’s perfect to use as a test bed to gain familiarity with a new game engine. ...

There’s a lot of issues I have with gaming. Lack of time, for one. I’d really like to have a lot more time for gaming, and blogging about games. But then I think – hold on, wait a second, I work. And if I wasn’t working, then I’d be broke, and unable to play games (or at least, unable to enjoy playing games), and then I’d lose the house and be on the streets and be miserable and clutching the Othello set my mom bought me when I was a kid, my last remaining game. ...

Not a GO Board My mom died when she was fairly young. Her carnival glass collection, her silver, her jewelry, I have nothing of those things. I think her new husband tossed all the childhood things of mine I was keeping at her place, all my childhood books I’d hoped to pass on to my kids. All I have of her are three gifts she got me; my Orange Teddy, a boxed collection of The Lord of the Rings (which will be my son’s), and this old Othello board. ...
