My Son vs the World (of Warcraft)

My son is a lazy gamer. In Warcraft III, he prefers to play the god games where you gather all the power ups and then are pretty much unbeatable. He knows where they all are, grabs them, waits for people to find him, then puts his guy on auto while he watches TV. The other players send wave after wave of lower powered units at him and he just mows them down. ...

WoW and EQ2: Newbie Quests

Finished fighting the Scholar to finish the Strange Black Stone quest, turned to go, and was taken aback for a moment by the beauty of the sunset. My God, video games have come a long way. And this looked absolutely fabulous on my widescreen monitor… Every gamer blog eventually talks about WoW and some-other-game, usually pointing out how WoW is better, or worse, than this other game. Usually the biases are pretty clear; I left WoW to play EQ2, so you know where I’m coming from. But now and again, I still play WoW. This series of posts is a love affair for two great games. ...

New WoW Server

I said I wouldn’t play World of Warcraft again until they made a new Pacific Time Roleplay server… and a friend wrote me to tell me that they have done just that. Sentinels. Before work this morning I logged in, made a troll shaman named Yenna, ran around a little and … it’s just like when Kirin Tor was new. And so six months from now, it will become the non-RP, trashtalking mess that KT became. ...

Nightmares 2

I was about fifty/fifty on whether or not to log into EQ1 or WoW and raid last night; the coin came down EQ1, and so I logged in and made my extremely slow way to the Demiplane of Blood. This is the most cleric-unfriendly zone in the game; to get there safely, a good invis and a nice lev is vital. Sure, I have “cleric invis” - my 18 seconds of invulnerability - and I have used that when invis wore off at a bad time. ...

Sand Elves

Kinda bugs me when people insist they cannot play the original EverQuest because of “the horrible graphics”. Sure, seven years ago, the graphics were blocky - but that was seven years ago. Things have changed quite a lot. This shot, killing some treants in the new Prophecy of Ro zone of Taka’hiz… (or whatever…), wouldn’t look out of place in EQ2, or even WoW, if you made the colors brighter. ...

Pointless Accomplishments

Onyxia’s death on our first night of trying makes us the #1 Horde guild on Kirin Tor; Toxic and Anomaly Faction are #2 and #3… and this is the first time I have ever been in the top-ranked guild of a server. Or part of a server; Alliance has one guild, Seraphic, that is waaaaay ahead of us. Oh, well. Won’t change my life any, but it does make for nice screenshots… and a little bit of bragging. We kinda took over Orgrimmar when they mounted Onyxia’s head near the gates for all to see. ...

Majordomo & Ragnaros

We finally solved the Majordomo encounter in Molten Core. That’s a fun encounter; the first WoW encounter with the kind of complexity of the newer EverQuest encounters. I really had to work hard healing, used every bit of mana, three mana pots, and two dark runes. That won us the right to go visit Ragnaros, the immense boss of Molten Core. Sure, he wiped us, but we got him down further than we expected, and plenty of screenshots. ...

Finished Onyxia Key!

I really don’t like key quests. They’re just an intentional roadblock to slow people down - very artificial. EverQuest was full of these artificial roadblocks, but since then, they’ve become enlightened; for most places, five fully-flagged people can get a sixth unflagged in free. And many times, they can get a bit in the raid that fully flags them, bypassing the need to do a quest series just for one or two people. ...

Molten Core, Part 2: Coke or Pepsi?

This weekend, I joined millions of other people in the nation’s weekly Molten Core runs. But get a load of this… Count the number of health bars I’m watching… My group’s health bars, the health bars of the main tank group and the two offtank groups, a chart of the health of the ten unhealthiest people in the raid. Health of my target, health of the targets of all the tanks…. LOTS to watch… ...

Molten Core and a bunch of BRS

While I have been off “moving” and “cleaning” and “spending time with my children”, Prophetic Fate has been forging ever deeper into Molten Core - they are up to Majordomo, the penultimate boss in MC. I just logged in to say hello yesterday, but was drawn into joining the Molten Core raid. Garr was the first target of the day. He knocked us all about awhile, but seemed pretty easy. ...
