What wonders does the in box of mystery hold for us today? Cryptic announces veteran rewards for players who keep an active subscription to Star Trek Online. Wizard101: Pet games coming to an iPhone near you?

First there was Wizard101, a MMO unlike any other that played in a unique fashion but lived happily on your PC. There were minigames, variants on popular Flash games widely available, that conferred some in-game benefits – they would refill your mana potions, let you win gold and some magic items. Their iPhone game WizardBlox took the minigames off the PC and on to the smart phone. Playing WizardBlox on your phone could give your character benefits in game as well – benefits you could pass on to other players if you liked. ...

A New Contest from Wizard101!

Professor Drake stood silently behind his podium. Beside him sat a mysterious crate that would, sometimes, shift a little one way or another. Sometimes it grunted. The three o’clock “Mythterious Creatures” class sat nervously at their desks – Abigail, Bailey, Cedric and Daniel. They looked terrified. In Drake’s classes, everyone looked terrified. “I have graded your ‘assignments’ from last night,” said the professor, punctuating his words with strikes of his wand to his podium. “Pathetic. It was a simple enough question, and if any of you had been studying, you could easily have answered how the height of trolls varies with the amount of phlogiston used in their second stage of production. I have recommended to Headmaster Ambrose that, as teaching this class is clearly a waste of my time and yours, you all be returned to your homes on the Spiral.” ...

Wizard101: Advanced Pets Preview

I’m not sure how I missed this fantastic video of the new pet games (and more!) coming with the next huge content update for Wizard101 (and thanks to Sierra Starsong at Modern Automagic for the heads-up!) This adds the feature I have been wanting for YEARS (well, maybe just a year) – letting my pets roam free. Plus pet races and other pet games…. This is Wizard101 moving into Free Realms territory. I’m all for it! ...

The best MMO for a new player?

Reader Velmonte asks: Tipa, what game would you consider for a person who is just breaking into the world of mmo’s? One of my friends, has been wanting to try one, but I need to suggest a game that has basic quests, but is still fun, colorful, and immersive. I was hoping you could help me out! Thanks! This is a really great question. With new MMOs coming out every day and hundreds to choose from, it can be crazy trying to find the perfect game. Fact is, maybe you can’t find the perfect game first try, or maybe after playing an MMO a bit, you find yourself ready for something new. ...

Wizard101: Who are the mysterious Celestians?

KingsIsle today released a mysterious screenshot of some of the folks we’ll be meeting when we journey to the undersea realm of Celestia this summer. They promise to reveal some of the darkened characters little by little as the day approaches, but we here at West Karana have a pretty good idea what we’ll find. In the background we clearly see the majestic , protecting Earth from dangers both in space and under the water. Inside the glass dome, you can see a Farmville crane constructing a Pumpkin Hatchery, so there’s anime, space/water warfare and super popular social gaming, all in one shot. The characters appear be facing a photographer who would be outside the dome, indicating a species of water-dwelling portrait artists, clearly a reference to the precinct sketch artist in . ...

Wizard101 announces Celestia, Pet Breeding and more!

Very exciting news today from KingsIsle. We’ve known for awhile that a new world was coming, and that it was likely to be the last of the worlds mentioned in the original game, Celestia. Headmaster Ambrose mentioned last year that we might see Astral magic introduced in the game, and it is part of this expansion. What we DIDN’T know (until their teaser announcement last month) was that they were adding a broad range of pet games. Breeding? Racing? Can’t wait :) ...

Wizard101: Broad hints about upcoming PET WARS!?

Well, the fine faculty at the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts have put a month’s worth of speculation into a handful of paragraphs. The full press release is below, but let’s take a look at it, shall we? First, the picture of Pets on a Podium. We can’t help but notice that there’s a crab or lobster pet wearing the banner “Celestia”. This more or less confirms what we students have long suspected, that the next would be Celestia, a land that apparently contains water and beaches and an emphasis on flight. Jonathan Livingston Seagull World? MAYBE! ...

Weekend Gaming: EVE, EQ2, STO, DDO, Dragonica Online

I’ve come to realize, over the years, that I really suck at MMOs. Easily distracted and easily bored, the sort of long-term, intense concentration that is the mark of the truly successful grinder is impossible for me. I can’t be the only one; the newer crop of MMOs seem made for people with short attention spans. World of Warcraft’s “Looking for Dungeon” tool lets you defeat the ultimate evils of Azeroth half an hour at a time. EQ2’s newest mission maps reward you if you can finish the entire instance before the necromancer is done buffing her pet. ...

EVE, W101, WoW, STO... Sheesh!

I am playing too many MMOs, it’s true… but there’s some good gaming out there. In EVE Online, the Ishtar Project saw a minor victory as I sold my two run Ishtar blueprint for 30 million ISK after only a couple of days on the market. That worked out incredibly well. In another stroke of luck, I put another Vexor blueprint in for invention and produced ANOTHER two run Ishtar blueprint. This one I will likely keep to make the Heavy Assault Cruiser of my dreams. ...
