TIS-100: A puzzle from the dawn of computing

I think you wanted to make that zero a four? If you ever thought back with longing to beautiful summer days spent filling out code sheets with a worn-down pencil and a well-thumbed processor instruction code book your only companions, well, Zachtronics’ TIS-100 might just be your worst nightmare. The thin plot has your Aunt Doris sending you a bunch of your recently-deceased uncle’s belongings, including the TIS-100 and its manual, the last thing on which he was working. Because of some cryptic hints in the manual, and because you have more curiosity than sense, you decide to recreate his work and discover the hidden purpose of this mysterious device. ...

D&D: On the road again!

Trouble at the Inn Since last I wrote of our adventures, we nearly met death in a dungeon guarded by a half dragon and a roper… which was pretty exciting. It was there that I learned that even immobile creatures will move to prevent Cloud of Daggers from hitting them. It was there I first learned that ropers – creatures that mimic stalagmites – can move, actually. Deadly creatures. I’m even looking at kobolds with new respect. And I say that as one who uses a kobold costume as part of her famous traveling show, “The Kobold and the Kanary”. Not a misspelling – Kanaries are like canaries, except with scales instead of feathers. and they weigh three tons. ...

Act III: The Anger of the Gods

When I got to Act III in Pillars of Eternity, I stopped. One of the first quests I got asked me to strengthen the future bloodline of a long-established family by culling its weak souls so stronger ones could take their place. The weak soul the quest giver had in mind was currently in a child. Now, in the Pillars world, past lives are a real thing, and death is not the end. Dealing with past lives drives the plot of the game. Aloth shares his mind with a barbaric woman from the past; the ranger companion is tracking down a reincarnated hero of her tribe; the protagonist and the villain of the game… well, no spoilers here. ...

Suddenly, a dragon...

I kinda figured there’d be a dragon at the bottom of the Endless Paths. I knew there was an achievement for killing all the dragons in Pillars of Eternity, and I hadn’t seen any, yet. Some mean old drakes, but no actual dragons. This is the first. Given what a tough fight Od Nua gave me, I’m not at all certain I want to tangle with a dragon at this level (10). ...

Tanks for all the help...

Darna was a long time, well-respected member of Team Tanglewood. I loved her from the moment I first recruited her back at the Black Hound Inn in the Gilded Vale. I made her a monk, because I needed a tank, and I thought someone whose power operated from wounds would fit the bill. I found out just now that there was an actual warrior waiting to be hired… but I guess I missed him. Anyway, Darna couldn’t tank at all, her DPS was subpar, I (a rogue) ended up tanking far too often; even the ranger’s pet made a better tank. ...

Besiege! Done with the current official content...

Besiege! is still in alpha, and most of the maps and challenges aren’t ready. I finished up what there is of the main campaign – the first island – and had a lot of fun coming up with weird machines to bring the war home to these poor jumping people. I’ll pick it up again when the next island opens up. #Besiege Besiege! Finishing off the first world. These are my solutions for the last few maps of the only currently officially shipped maps. There’s ...

Besiege! Watch the skies!

Silly, stupidly addictive game. Went back and tried to conquer a previous level with the power of flight. And a little later – a mobile blender? #Besiege Yet more Besiege! A few more bespoke Besiege creations. Haven’t yet found the über siege weapon that will kill all th This was posted on Google+

Besiege! Love at first siege...

I love “builder” games like Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program. When I saw the zany creations from Besiege (available from the developers http://www.besiegethegame.com/ or Steam Early Access) I knew I had to get it. I’m pretty far from making the incredible creations I see everywhere… but I have some ideas… #Besiege Besiege Cannon Test Just playing around with one of the first levels of Besiege, where you build your own bizarre siege ...

Valkyria Chronicles: Showdown at Naggia (1)

Valkyria Chronicles: Showdown at Naggia (1) I didn’t get a chance to work on this battle last week. My first try at it failed, but I always need to try it once just to see what the map is like. It’s kinda fun watching all my heroes die in valorous ways, only to bring them back to life with a L)oad. Like my first attempt, I took the first camp with Rosie, then brought Alicia and Hannes around as backup. Preparing the way with Alicia’s grenade thrower, we moved into the next camp in the next two moves, which put our tanks in the field – and fielded the enemy Valkyrur. ...
