Octomini Project Day 2: Primed and Ready

I’d really wanted to talk about playing in the new EverQuest server today. I took a day off from work to play EverQuest and watch the SpaceX rocket take off with two American astronauts from American soil. Neither happened. I guess the weather just wasn’t quite right for either. It wasn’t a total loss. It was still nice to spend an unexpected day with my boyfriend. We went to the local game store, which opened early for us. We were the only ones there. I bought a very small paint brush and a couple vials of paint; Kasul bought a couple of discount games. The person working there didn’t know when they’d be running Friday Night Magic again. We were all of us wearing masks. I bought an Ikoria bundle just for fun. ...

Octomini Project Day 1: Minis Arrive

A week or two ago, I went to Hero Forge and downloaded 3D models of two of my Octopath Traveler minis, Olberic and Primrose. I’d fixed Olberic’s sword to resemble the one he used in game a little better. Primrose is a mini we haven’t seen before. I thought they’d be fun to fiddle with, maybe learn how to paint. I downloaded the latest version of FreeCAD and started teaching myself how to play with 3D models. ...

Am I Witchy Enough For You?

Since I finished Octopath Traveler a few weeks ago, I’ve been looking for another really decent RPG in which to lose myself. My boyfriend had several suggestions: Persona 4, DragonQuest XI, or the Witcher 3. Now I’ve seen the Netflix series, so I kinda know the characters. When there were still places called “libraries” that people could go to, I’d borrowed the “Blood of Elves” Witcher book, which takes place after the events in the Netflix series. ...

I got my minis: Now Octopath Traveler is with me forever.

It wasn’t super long ago that I ordered these minis from Hero Forge. I’d backed their latest Kickstarter and had a color mini as a reward. I didn’t really have an idea what mini I’d want to make, but I was pretty sure I’d think of something. When Hero Forge announced that their color design tools were ready to use, I was just finishing Octopath Traveler. I decided then and there that what I really wanted was a mini of my main character, H’aanit the Huntress. Once I’d designed her in the tools, I really couldn’t not design the other seven travelers, and so I did. ...

MMO updates: Crowfall, EverQuest, Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon, DCUO

I apologize for the brief news on Crowfall. I’d meant to get deeper into the PvE, but while I was building up my kingdom in the creative mode, the test server came down and I moved on to other things. It’s been years since Chinese publishers ChangYou took over the Shadowbane IP, and eight or so since they released plans to relaunch it. Now, here in 2020, it looks like they are finally really relaunching the famed empire building, PvP MMO. Shadowbane was notable for the huge number of beast races available for play, as well as the EVE-like way armies could gather to siege or defend player-created cities. ...

Octopath Traveler is Octo-Finished.

It takes a village to kill a monster My Switch profile says I have been playing Octopath Traveler for about 135 hours. This is only approaching the time I spent playing Skyrim, which is somewhere around 150 hours. I was about sixty hours in when I started finishing the job quests. First was Alfyn’s, only because I accidentally killed his Chapter 4 boss. Then my main character, the hunter H’aanit, and the rest of my main team. ...

Daily Gaming Log: April 28 Royal

Last night: Started off with the dailies in DCUO. Kaptain KY had told me to fly left before the final fight to escape from Lobo’s Space Hogg, and that worked. Spode had said there was a special achievement for waiting for Luthor’s escape teleporter to recharge and then following it where it led, and I did. And I fell right into my very own Volcanic Hideout. So this is my new place now. Elon Musk, eat your heart out. ...

Daily Gaming Log: April 27.

Octopath Traveler: Made it to the second phase of Galdera, the true final boss. This was my first time making it this far. Now that I’ve got the first phase understood, I just have to figure out how to get through this part before I can finally put the game away. Part of the issue came after I killed his three living weapons: he covered his weaknesses except for a couple I couldn’t break quickly. Then he swallowed all our boost points, spirit points, and health. I did my best but he killed half the team in one hit, and then the other half in the next hit. ...

While True(): Learn to teach your cat to drive.

Can you feel the feline neurons growing? I’ve got a soft spot for “programming” games. Since that’s my day job, I can usually convince myself that this is the one sort of game I might actually be good at. I’m looking at you, Octopath Traveler final boss that I’m too timid to fight anymore. Programming games can run the gamut from super-techy TIS-100, which asks you to write multiprocessor programs in a bespoke assembly language, to beginner friendly 7 Billion Humans, which has you write parallel processing algorithms in a Snap-like visual programming language. ...
