My first minute in Kung Foo!

Just what it says on the tin, a picture from my first minute in the Kung Foo! closed beta. I was lucky enough to get a closed beta invite yesterday, and after confirming this is a closed beta I COULD write about, gleefully installed it. Oh yes, I was also watching my new Glee DVDs. It was done by the time I woke up, so I jumped into this lighthearted martial arts-themed PvP MMO and … ...

Dungeons & Dragons Online: A Hobbesian Cleric

What’s a Hobbesian cleric? One who is nasty, brutish and SHORT. That’s Derra. Seriously, she looked better in the character creator. But when she got washed up on that shore just to be taunted by some halfling rogue (and not even a cute one), well, I guess that’s when she lost it. When she met up minutes later with a cleric, an ELF, I think, who was so stuck up and SUPERIOR that she had a buff that could stop you from dying. I mean, where’s the skill in that? “Oh, hi, here’s a buff where you can’t die. I’m the best cleric in the world! Lalalala! You go do whatever it is you DO do, dear!” ...

EVE Online: Into the Wormhole

Into the whirlpool, where matter vanishes Degenerate star, arm of Orion An iron sun, the forbidden circle It’s a mountain, it’s a black horizon…. Blue Oyster Cult, Heavy Metal (Black and Silver) If there’s one activity which defines my EVE corp, it would have to be manufacturing. We do missions – a lot of them – but they don’t define the corp in the same way. We rarely ever do PvP. But we’re always making things. The corp makes its money in researching blueprints and selling high quality blueprint copies, as well as the occasional production run. My own experiments with invention and production have been wildly successful; 90% success rate on Hammerhead II blueprint invention, and I sell all the drones I can make at amazing profit margins. ...

WoW: Behind the Green Door

While leveling Tipa the Gnome Rogue through WoW’s classic dungeons, it was brought home to me again and again how my poor level of twinkitude was hurting my standings in random groups. Even though I read lots of WoW Rogue guides on setting my talent spec and what sort of ability rotation to use, and even though my average dps has risen from 65 to 175 in the past few days, in groups I am not often a top performer. Sometimes half the group is doubling my dps. They have amazing looking weapons and armor with shoulders up to HERE. ...

EVE Online: Acts & Revelations

One of the big hurdles I’ve been struggling to, um, hurdle (I guess) in EVE Online is the whole process of a Level 4 mission. They are the big money makers and they give loads of standing and loyalty points, so if you’re going to do missions at all, you want to do Level 4s if you can. My usual process with Level 4 missions was first, to obtain the mission. My standings with the Gallente Federation Navy is so high that I can get these missions nearly anywhere in Gallente space. So that’s good. Then I get my Dominix battleship ready. Make sure it is repaired and insured, loaded with drones (it is a drone boat, after all). Plenty of ammunition in the hold. ...

Wizard101's Abracadoodle is at your mercy!

Wizard101 is having a CAPTION CONTEST! Wizard101’s lighthearted Abracadoodle web comic is turning over the writing duties to YOU! I guess the regular writer is off enjoying the holidays, or something, leaving the artist to slave over his easel, drawing a comic while everyone else is away, but without a CLUE as to what the characters are saying. That’s where WE come in. We’re gonna make the writer rue the day he or she decided to unlock the shackles that bound them to the computer and visit family by coming up with lines of our OWN. ...

Weekend Gaming: WoW, AoC, EVE, W101 et al

I just love this picture, I don’t know why! I think it might be the best picture I’ve ever taken in the World of Warcraft. It’s the dead boss at the end of the Orange Crystal part of Maraudon. I’ve been to the Orange Crystal side about a half dozen times now; Purple Crystal once. I think I’ve outgrown Uldaman now, I never get offered it any more. We just started with Zul’Farrak tonight. ...

You go down to Honest Skeeve’s Used Starship Emporium and Deli and look over their probe frigates. You base your buying decision on which of these important factors? You have the skills to fly the ship. The ship can fit high tech cloaking modules for safety in dangerous space. ...

World of Warcraft: Just-in-Time Grouping

He was like that when I got here! Honest! I was wondering, the other day, what if you REALLY had to use the toilet – it was an emergency, do-or-die situation. And you get into the bathroom and you discover a dead body in the stall you wanted to use. Do you report the dead body immediately or do you go do your business in another stall first? ...
