New World has been released for just a week. It is way, way too early to start forecasting any sort of trends from this. Like, that’s ever stopped me before. I repeat this whenever I talk about Google Trends. Google Trends is based solely on what people are searching for, and does not correlate with the actual popularity of the game, the number of players, or anything. It’s just the number of searches on a specific topic in a certain amount of time. I would assume that search terms are connected to a specific topic by the searcher clicking on a relevant link in the search results, but that’s just a guess. That said… ...
City of Heroes INNN SPAAAAAAACE MMO Ship of Heroes posted an update on this summer’s “MIssion Beta”, in which I and apparently many, many others participated… Just boppin’ along… One item that came up again and again in their post was the lack of difficult content. Now, I played through the showcase mission arc solo, and didn’t have a lot of trouble. I did pick up on the consumable boosters, which weren’t clearly explained, and that helped me get through some of the tougher fights. Carefully splitting groups using the terrain to block NPCs or just sending in a ranged attack from maximum range meant I never felt overwhelmed, when the superhero ethos is all about barreling in and making a big splash. ...
I didn’t know what to expect when I logged into EverQuest Online Adventures for the first time. When a dark elf cleric named Skandalf started following me around, healing me when I fought anything, I thought she was a bot. But now, I’m not so sure. **Update: **Apparently Skandalf was the name of a mage pet in the live version of EQOA, sort of like any EQ player would know who you were talking about if you mentioned “Jabober”. How I got a healing mage pet for awhile is something I don’t know. Thanks to the folks on the EQOA Revival Discord for setting me straight :-) ...
DC Universe Online’s “House of Legends” expansion was meant to create a new game experience for both old heroes and new. It got halfway there. DCUO splits its players into two groups, and it’s not heroes vs villains. Heroes and Villains can group together now and complete the content together, and have been able to for some time. Most of the threats in DCUO now affect both hero and villain alike, and it’s probably not long before they can join together (if reluctantly) in the same super-league. It happens all the time in the comics and the cartoons. ...
This is going to be a fairly short post, as I didn’t get a chance last night and pretty soon I’ll have to get ready for work. But: House of Legends is live in DC Universe Online, and it’s every bit as good (and bad) as promised! The Good Leveling is fast. My baby villain went from a CR of 53 to 64 – 11 CR gained in a night, just from drops.- Old armor sets are freely available. My main gained two skill points just from completing old armor sets.- Allies are fun little summons, but they don’t stick around.- Easy to find pickup raids.- Seemed like every solo and duo I did with the baby villain scored massive upgrades. City of Heroes cast a long shadow over the superhero MMO landscape. There’s easily a half dozen efforts to resurrect the game in some form, either by recreating the original game, or building a clear sequel. As of now, though, there’s only two MMOs that can carry COH’s torch – superhero MMOs where you can build your own hero your own way. And those are Cryptic’s Champions Online, and Daybreak’s DC Universe Online. ...
It’s Developer Appreciation week. Whenever these come up, I really don’t know what to say. The games I’ve played have changed my life. When things were darkest, they maybe even saved my life. MMOs, in particular, have made it easy for me to “find my people”. I’ve played with the same group of people now for more years than I care to count. My daughter married someone she met in EverQuest. I’m living with someone I met there. ...
I didn’t have big goals for tonight. Grind to 50 with the jobs I intend to take on the trip to the World of Darkness. And then… maybe jump into Final Fantasy XIV Online, and try the MMO version of FF3’s final boss. So that’s what I did. Three of the jobs are basically no-brainers. Ninja is the most capable physical attacker in the game. Devout is the best healer, and Sage is the best magical attacker, having access to all black magic, white magic, and summoner spells. ...
