The Best Christmas Present in the World

My grandson Matthew Edward was born this afternoon, 1:49 PM, December 24, 2006! More later… someone hacked my blog so I put up this temporary theme until I get it all sorted out. I was going to redesign it anyway. Merry Christmas to everyone! Exclusive YouTube Video! Check it out ! ...

Interview with Clint Gilcrush

I was floored when Pilotman told me that Curt Schilling’s in-game avatar was in fact still in the game, on the Thundering Steppes docks. I journeyed out to visit with him and talked with him a bit about politics, giggling goblins and his plans for the future. Dina: Thanks for much for agreeing to speak with me today! It is a great honor to be here. If I may ask, how did you come to live on these docks? ...

Spammity Spam

I read nearly all the spam Surya gets so I can tune our spam blocker to keep it out of the mailboxes of the bright and beautiful Elois upstairs. Here are some gems. Do not in any case enter our store! Do not look at our prices and wide choice of cheap legal downloadable 0Em software! Do you really need this software? You will definitely need manuals and different promo-discs that are included in the packs from the manufacturers that cost hundreds of bucks! We do not offer you this – only 100% full-working oem software without any manuals. ...

EQ2: Of Interagents, Vindicators and Glowy Things

I’ve done the D’Vinn’s Throne Room instance (a level 30-35 instance within Crushbone Keep that starts the plot completed in the 60ish instance Acadechism) a couple of times, but didn’t get a chance to get a good picture of Vindicator Crush when he arrives at the call of Emperor D’Vinn. Because I’ve been healing it with my defiler, Etha, and when you’re healing, in EQ2 as in all other MMOs in which I’ve healed, all you see is health bars. ...

Health insurance is for the weak

My son told me yesterday, after I got home from work, that he had a pain and an ache in his mouth; he thought it might be his wisdom teeth coming in, and the people he’d asked in our EQ2 guild had told him it might well be. Ah, the new millennium, where actual family is thousands of miles away, and we use strangers in their place through the magical medium of the internet. ...

EQ2: Staff of the Observers and Robe of the Oracle

Because sometimes I go to a restaurant, or a home, or a dank dungeon, that are without proper lighting fixtures, I now carry my own. That’s the Lumen 1000 Floor Lamp with Variable Bulb strapped to my back. And hello, I’m Reddy Kilowatt. Glad to meet ya. It’s got to be either a lamp or the Staff of the Observers. I just had to have it – for sentimental reasons if nothing else. Way back in 1999, in EQ1, that quest was done for me by the guild United Norrath Coalition when I joined. I was so moved… it was entirely unexpected but so much in character for the great people of UNC. ...

I need you to go find the little gopher

Surya does its business via phone and email, and our email has been overwhelmed by spam. Last week, I trained SpamAssassin on one of our sales manager’s spam folder and set it loose over the Thanksgiving weekend. It blocked well over a thousand spam mails from reaching people’s inboxes. Instead, I sent them to mine, so I could make sure non-spam wasn’t getting blocked. Many spam mails today are one big image with an ad in it, followed by random snippets of text that have nothing to do with anything to make it seem to a spam filter like it was an actual email. ...

GH2: Bonding

Andrew finished Guitar Hero 2 on Medium before I finished it on Hard (medium not requiring mastery of hammer-ons and pull-offs as hard does, and plus I get distracted with Kansas and Matthew Sweet). He unlocked the very last encore, Freebird, and the last play mode, Pro Facedown. It’s 1AM and we both should be in bed, since we have work or school in the morning, but instead, guitar controllers in hand, we’re rocking out to Freebird, matching each other note-for-note and annoying the neighbors. ...

EQ2: The Court of Innovation

I might as well delete my post on character goals, because I didn’t go through with hardly any of them. But I did it in the name of more fun! I tearfully put Dera (59 inquisitor) to rest. But when I heard someone putting together a group for the Court of Innovation, an instance inside Klakanon, I couldn’t say no. A Tier 6 instance and one I hadn’t really seen in beta? And they need a healer? ...

Ignore me, I'm over-reacting.

Business is incredibly slow here at Surya at the end of a year. This year, we’re asked to work only four-day work weeks in December. Now since I’m salaried, I shouldn’t care, as I supposedly get a fixed annual pay regardless of how much or how little I work. That was the meaning of ‘salaried’ every other place I ever worked. Here, however, it’s used as a starting point from which money is deducted. So no matter how much I work I can never make more. If I miss any time, however, I will make less. So these days I am being told to take off in December will be taken from my salary. ...
