Spore: Final Thoughts

Baby Diver looks for food, flagella and true love in the primordial goo of Spore’s Cell Phase. If there’s one lesson to be learned from playing Spore, it’s that you are unimportant, life will go on without you, and your only legacy left to an uncaring universe might be that some bit of you will live on afterward in something – or someone – else. MMOs and other single player games try to reassure us that we’re important, at the center of the universe. Spore has no such comforts. You’re a faceless minion and you’re gonna die. At some point you have to give up your false notion that you’ll go on forever, and just enjoy being where you are, living in the moment. ...

Twitter

I signed up for Twitter a long time ago but forgot entirely about it until now. Anyway, my username there is tipadaknife (a play on Tipa the Knife from my rogue days, and Tip of the Knife. I can’t remember who came up with that. It wasn’t me, but I grabbed on to it :) As I think of other social spaces I belong to and actually occasionally check, I’ll add them to the Contact Me! widget on the sidebar so we can all meet up on our various places to be.

American Idol Tour -- Hartford, CT

I don’t have any video and not many pictures because the indicator on my camera’s battery lies. My camera is so happy to be taking pictures in the dark that it builds up its energy for a couple of seconds so it can release it all at once in an arena-filling burst. It can do that about five times. Concession stand. Pretty weak, I know, but I’m telling you, you won’t see the Idols here. Well, just one. ...

To my music-starved guild.

I can’t believe you guys had NEVER heard of the bands I listen to. I mean, I’m hardly on the cutting edge, and these bands aren’t that obscure… Okay, backstory here for those who weren’t on Vent last night during our Veksar run. Rogbog was web-casting our Nostalgia night to the world (interest when it was us killing dragons: high. Interest when it was us grinding levels and AA: low). Anyway, he was running some music behind the video, I asked him who it was, he said , I thought they reminded me of and I happened to mention some of the bands I listened to, and nobody had heard of any of them… Now usually people make fun of my musical tastes because I like 70s bands like Jethro Tull and Blue Oyster Cult, but THESE bands aren’t old… so I was surprised. ...

If you just want to find anything, Cuill sucks.

Everyone’s excited about the new search site “Cuill.com”, just because they are burning their venture capital on caviar-filled bathtubs or whatever and it was started by ex-Google employees. Personally, I have yet to find anything I was looking for on that site. Like, just today, I wanted to see how well the personal finance program Quicken was doing in getting ported to Linux, perhaps via the WINE software that can bring many Windows programs to the Linux desktop. My son’s going off to college and I will need a very strict budget. So I typed “linux wine quicken” into a few search engines. ...

Save the Middleman!

Rumor has it that The Middleman, probably the best SF/comedy on TV this season, is in danger! Not of cancellation, but of being restricted to just one season. Creator Javier Grillo-Marxuach writes on The Middleblog that despite stellar network support, ratings haven’t been great, and they have decided to end The Middleman at episode 12, and to go out with a bang. If you don’’t watch The Middleman, you should. And if you DO watch, but via torrent or something, well, watch it on TV (I do, now), or watch it online – ABC Family streams each show after it airs, and people watching via the web in that way definitely support the show. ...

Happy birthday, Atticus David Shimkin

Happy dad Brian writes: We’re happy to introduce our son - Atticus David Shimkin. Born July 18, 2008 at 1:05 am, weighing 6 lbs 15 oz, 19 inches long. Everything went smoothly, more details and pictures to follow. Mother and baby are doing just great. The baby’s been really alert and started feeding immediately. And I’d like to point out that I was, I think, alone in the family for predicting the baby would be a boy. I’ve been thinking of him as a “he” for months! I’m also very happy to see my dad’s name as Atticus’ middle name. It’s a tradition in Brian’s family not to discuss baby names with anyone, so I didn’t know Atty’s name until a couple of minutes ago. I wonder what his name would have been if he had been a girl? ...

Site maintenance...

I just upgraded to the newest version of Wordpress, so maybe it will stop bugging me about using an old version. I also stopped the random header banner changing. I always thought the actual image of West Karana would be the best one for this blog… it just looks so tranquil and peaceful… y’know, except for the huge spiders, supersized beetles, giants and werewolves, it’s not a bad little place.
