The time is now...

Today the Unix time stamp hits 1234567890. Today, all Unix/Linux geeks around the world are writing scripts like this one: import time `while time.time() < 1234567890.0: time.sleep(0.25)` print "The time is",time.time(),"!" Seriously. Gotta do it.

Beta News & More

City of Heroes is currently running their Valentine event, the one time in the year when heroes and villains can come together and luuuurve each other. Visit Pocket D, the rockin’ night club presided over by the hip DJ Zero, his power vendors Chill and Dram, and somewhat alarmed mission-giver and part time DJ Scratch to find out how you can save the Rogue Isles AND Paragon City from an onslaught of super-powered war bots. There’s also some more information about the secretive Architect project, the future of interactive entertainment within City of Heroes. The Architect company will allow you to set the parameters, NPCs and goals for short missions of your own creation. It doesn’t seem like you’ll be able to actually build your own levels; you’ll select a setting and probably a size, where the NPCs should be and what they say and do, and off you go. Not quite the game creator I was hoping for, but looks like a good time nonetheless. ...

Music for a Meltdown

Some of you may know about the HUGE turmoil in my personal life that happened yesterday, and if you don’t, well, be thankful :) Upshot is, I didn’t finish the comic I was doing. BUT! I come bearing tunes instead! While recording my story for Saylah’s Game Fiction Podcast, I ended up with my Rock Band microphone hooked up to my computer, and Audacity, a multi-track freeware audio recording program running on same, and got to thinking. You know what would be cool? To play all five parts of a Renaissance recorder ensemble piece, just for fun. ...

The Evolution of Ebony

A few weeks ago, the geek-o-sphere was abuzz with a picture of the Mona Lisa drawn by fifty overlapping translucent polygons… I thought it was a neat hack, and forgot all about it until last night. I’d just gotten home from a painful root canal, and needed SOMETHING to take my mind off of it… So I decided to try my hand at this. I took his algorithm and implemented it in a REAL programming language – Python – not that filthy C#.NET – using PyGame to do the rendering, and put a picture of my daughter’s dog Ebony into the hopper, stepped back, and let evolution take its course… ...

Sorry for the outages...

Seems I exhausted my 25 GB bandwidth allotment for the month. I bought some more, but I am going to move this blog over to another host. This time for real! I have a separate host for my guild’s forums, and meant to run them side by side for awhile to see if the new one was more stable than the old one. It SEEMS to be… and anyway, I can’t afford two hosts, so as soon as I can get the content moved over (and there’s a lot of it – 12 Mb just for the text content, I dunno how much for all the pictures), I’ll move the domain over and, I hope, nobody will even notice the change. Except that my blog won’t disappear from the face of the internet a couple of times a year. ...

Playstation 3 Home beta

Though it was up and down more than an acrophobic yo-yo last night, I had a few good chances to log into the new Playstation 3 Home, SCEA’s new virtual world for Playstation 3 owners. It would be natural to see this as an answer to Microsoft’s New Xbox Experience, but it really isn’t. NXE is just a reskinning of the old UI, with avatars and groups. Home is a world. ...

ShutterCal?

Anski at Always Go Right blog wrote today about ShutterCal, a new social site. In this one, you take a picture every day, and post it on an online calendar. Plenty of people doing this on Flickr, but similar to NaNoWriMo, this one subtly nags you to take and post a picture. I’m not totally sold on the idea, but I thought I would give it a try. Just yesterday and today so far. ...

EQ2: Welcome to The Shadow Odyssey!

If SOE sticks to the schedule, then The Shadow Odyssey should be live about now. Amazon tells me my box was shipped today and should be here in time for Thanksgiving. I didn’t remember to also buy a digital download for my main account, so guess what I’ll be doing when I get home… Tonight and for the rest of this week, it’s going to be all about The Shadow Odyssey. I want to go on a crafting mission, first thing. My tailoring is at 60, which should be good enough – and I have an 80 jeweler if needed. In fact, I can two box them. ...
