DCUO: Lost in Wonderverse

I just read that DC Comics and DC Universe have been hit with massive layoffs. While I doubt DC Universe Online will be much affected, I have been playing this game for ten years now and have a little bit of time invested in it. I hope everyone there does well and lands on their feet. The latest DC Universe Online episode, “Wonderverse”, dropped last week. And… it’s not bad, it really isn’t. ...

Blaugust #10: A Cluttered Mind

I am not a creative person, and so today’s writing prompt from Krikket of Nerd Girl Thoughts has me a little stumped: Tell us about your physical creative space, and how it influences your content creation. I am an evangelist for clutter. It drives my boyfriend insane. “Why don’t you organize your books and DVDs so you can find what you’re looking for?” he asks. I don’t know what I’m looking for. I like having happy surprises. During the recent power outage, it was dark, and I took random books off the shelf to read by the LED flashlight of my phone. And I remembered where I was the last time I read them. Greg Egan’s “Schild’s Ladder”, for instance, still had the ticket stub in it for “Ratatouille”. I saw that with my stepmother sometime after my Dad died. I was visiting her up in Deerfield, New Hampshire and sleeping in her trailer out back, and that’s where I left this book, after reading it, before rediscovering it a few months later. ...

Sleeving Jaws of the Lion

When you have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. When you have duct tape, every problem looks like “not enough duct tape. Add more.” And, when you have a 3D printer, every problem looks like it could be solved with a few days design work, twelve hours in failed print attempts, and eight hours for a successful one. Like the original Gloomhaven game, its beginner-friendly side story expansion Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion stores its character decks and player boards in slim little fold-top cardboard envelopes. These are just barely large enough to hold everything without sleeves. With sleeves, they are just entirely inadequate. They can’t be fit. ...

Blaugust #6: Quoth the Blogger, "Nevermore".

Back in sixth grade, first day of science class, the teacher asked us “what is science?” First day, we were supposed to answer that? The paper was blank, the pencil was blunt, and I was just there wracking my brains, trying to figure out what science was. All I could think of when I thought about science were old movies with lots crazy guys in lab coats working with beakers and tubes and bubbling stuff, so I put down “Science is chemistry!” ...

Blaugust #9: Writing Posts the West Karana Way.

Sorry that I’ve been missing so many days of blogging. I really wanted to do a post every day, but last Tuesday, Tropical Storm Isaias rolled through and cut power to almost a million Connecticut residents, me included. We just got power back yesterday afternoon. Being without power in this 21st century world is weird. I would be reading books by the light of my phone flashlight, washing dishes by hand, bringing all my chargers and portable stuff to work to charge. A work I hadn’t seen since March 13th, the unlucky day we all had to abandon the office because of the pandemic. ...

Blaugust #4: I Don't Care What You're Drinking.

Today’s Blaugust writing prompt comes from Roger at Contains Moderate Peril, who asks: “What type of content do you feel is severely underrated?” And ima answer that, but first, I have to get something off my chest. SoMeOnE called me a curmudgeon yesterday! Is this what I’ve become? Is this just who everyone becomes, eventually? Am I just mad at the world, all the time? No, of course not. I love the world and everyone in it. I have kids and a boyfriend I love. I have three cats who allow me to care for them. I even like most of the games I play. ...

Townscaper

I like Townscaper. I feel like I’m in a Richard Scarry book. I want to walk around in my little town. This is the closest I can get, though. I live on the top floor of that red tower. Come visit! I think the code below will bring you here. Blaugust Day #3: Nothing is Real. But, That's Okay.

Today’s “Blaugust” writing prompt comes from Mailvatar at “MMOs and Other Stuff”. What are some key sources of media (games/movies/etc) that have shaped your worldview? What a great writing prompt. Because I have the specific answer to that, and it’s stayed with me my entire life. I blame a lot of things on the Uxbridge Public Library. Their kid’s section was really minimal. It was fine if you were truly little and liked story time, but once you got much past Dr. Seuss and Beatrix Potter, there just wasn’t a lot of stuff. ...

Blaugust #2: Everything You Like is Bad (and you should feel bad)

Today’s Blaugust prompt is from the blog Azerothian Life: What is some popular piece of content/media that seems to be universally loved that you have never been able to understand? I think it takes a very small person to judge what someone else likes. Everyone is different, and this difference, this diversity, is part of what makes us special. This whole social media phenomenon is so transformative because it allows people to connect in ways impossible in any other era of human history. ...

Blaugust Prompt #1: Core Fandoms

Do I even need to explain what Blaugust is? I imagine the Venn diagram of the people who read my blog and aren’t already well aware of Blaugust would be an empty circle. But I do love Venn diagrams. Here’s one. The question of the day is, “What would I change about one of my core fandoms?”. Another Venn diagram: I have a lot of interests, but nothing I’m really fanatical about. I mean, I used to be a fan. I used to be a fan of a lot of things. Back in California, I used to go to a lot of conventions – BayCon, SiliCon, Fanime – so I guess that I was a fan back then. ...
